Denver City was founded in 1858, and provided a good leaping off point for those hoping to find gold near Pike’s Peak. The city’s name was shortened to “Denver” in 1867, just before it became the capital of Colorado Territory. Once Denver became connected to the first transcontinental railroad, it quickly became an important Midwest commerce hub.
Denver, which is often called the “Mile-High City,” is home to about 635,000 people, with nearly 3 million people living in the greater metropolitan area. As the largest city in the 500-mile radius, Denver is still an important trade point in the Midwest. Denver is home to Lockheed Martin, Coors Brewing Company, and many other large American companies.
